Coastal exposure is site-specific

A beachfront property and an inland Gold Coast home do not experience identical exposure. Distance from surf, prevailing wind, vegetation, roof geometry and rain washing all influence surface condition.

What to inspect

• Salt deposits and surface contamination
• Corrosion at cut edges, fixings and laps
• Sheltered areas not regularly washed by rain
• Existing coating adhesion
• Contact between different metals
• Gutters, valleys and debris traps

Preparation before coating

Cleaning must remove contaminants without damaging the substrate. Corrosion and failed coatings require suitable preparation, and primers or finish coats should follow the selected manufacturer’s coastal-exposure guidance.

Maintenance expectations

A repaint does not remove the need for inspection and maintenance. COLORBOND recommends more frequent washing of areas not naturally rain-washed in coastal environments.
